Meditation on the Cross

by Susan Burke

Let this cross lean earthward.

Let our Lord yield

blessed and broken,
an eternity of surrender captured
in a moment’s mortality.

Let this cross, once whole,

its whole purpose to cause suffering,
be broken by the Divine.
Let it yearn toward heaven as if already in flight.

Let this cross hang in ragged pieces, transparent, so human
its wires, like necessary dependence, visible to all.

In this cross, we are given at once

further evidence of our fragility
and the abiding strength of our Father.

These earthly bonds we broken, this cross shattered,

the spirit of our Lord,
freed to eternal life,

Blessed and broken.
